Film Series: Film series will return in February 2007. One Community, One Book: This winter, as gardens across the Red Cedar Valley sleep, "One Community, One Book 2007", a reading series sponsored by the Menomonie Public Library and The Menomonie Area School District, invites community members to read the OCOB 2007 book, Seedfolks, by Paul Fleishman and to participate in exploring, "The Magic and Wisdom of Garden's: From Winter Dreams to Community Action." Seedfolks tells the story of a diverse group of inner-city Cleveland residents: young, old, tough, hopeful, brash, trusting; from many ethnic backgrounds; each planting their seeds into the soil of a trash-filled lot, and together transforming their cobbled together plots into a thriving community garden. Drawing on the themes in Seedfolks, OCOB 2007 has planned a series of programs including talks, panel presentations and a film festival, to inspire thoughts and discussion about gardeners, the seeds of change and the power of gardens to not only produce flowers and vegetables, but to create community. The OCOB 2007 Kick-off will be Monday, January 22 at 7PM at the Menomonie Public Library, when artist Sally Bowker and gardener Jerry Bowker speak about "Winter Dreams" and the way the natural world inspires both Sally's and Jerry's work and creativity. Following the Bowker's talk, participants can sign-out a copy of Seedfolks. Then on Monday, February 5th (7PM at the Library) an inter-generational panel will discuss the book and invite others to share their reactions. Monday February 19th at 7PM, the Seedfolks Film Festival will celebrate the creativity of films about "seeds of change" made by local young people with an Opening Night Gala. Planned in cooperation with the Children's Library Staff and Teen Advisory Board the Opening Night Gala will offer film makers the fun of a "Hollywood-style" celebration including limo rides to the Gala, paparazzi media attention, an opportunity for film makers to talk about their work with the public, and a showing of selected films chosen by a panel of judges. Saturday, February 24th beginning at 11 am in the library community room there will be a continuous showing of all of the films entered in the Seedfolks Festival. The final program, Everywhere's Gardensm will be presented on March 5th at 7PM at the library. It will offer inspiration and practical help to experienced and first-time gardeners through an opportunity to speak with master gardeners and a panel presentation about local community gardens. One Community, One Book, now in it's fourth year, is sponsored by the Menomonie Public Library with support from the Friends of the Menomonie Public Library and the Menomonie Area School District.
